MITAOE Academy of Engineering

IIChE Students’Chapter

Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers was born just before the Indian Independence during the days fomenting with nationalistic inspirations. Dr Hira Lal Roy, the great visionary and pioneer of chemical engineering education in India, along with few other stalwarts felt the need for such a forum within the country to rear the nascent initiatives for spread of chemical engineering education and foster the interest of the profession.
A modest beginning was made on 18 May 1947 in a room of Jadavpur University, Kolkata, with 30 members, little fund and nominal infrastructure. The IIChE has come a long way since. Today, with around 15,000 members on its roll, the Institute has emerged as the apex professional body of chemical engineering professionals in India and has developed a distinct profile of its own which is everchanging. Even as the IIChE is always moulding itself and playing a proactive role to keep up with the dynamic needs of the society and the economy, its working, governed by an all-India Council, has already revolved round the basic objectives set forth in the Memorandum of Association.
The activities of the Institute are spread across the country through its 33 Regional Centres and 58 Student Chapters, apart from the HQ located at a five-storied building of its own at the Jadavpur University campus. The Regional Centres promote and complement the activities and objectives of the Institute within their respective territorial limits, by organizing meetings, conferences and seminars; arranging workshops, refresher courses and counseling sessions; promoting research; guiding chemical engineering students in career planning; and initiating any other activities which are of social, technical and professional relevance to their members. They serve as open fora for their members who regularly gather for informal get-togethers and exchange of notes. The Regional Centres also confer awards, prizes and scholarships.

IIChE Students Chapter at School of Chemical Engineering, MIT Academy of Engineering got established in 2009. From its inception chapter organizes various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for overall development of students. The Chapter at Chemical Engineering Department organizes events like National level paper and poster competition “Prakalp”, seminars on recent developments in field of Chemical Engineering, workshops on various recent topics a and guest lectures by eminent personalities from industry and academics, Project Exhibitions, Add—on Courses, model competitions, etc. Chapter also organizes various sports events for students.
IIChE Students Chapter at Chemical Engineering Department received “Pidilite Industries Best Students Chapter Award” in year 2013 for splendid performance by IIChE Kolkata. Student’s members of chapter received various awards like “Vical Award, Goury Dutta Award, Outstanding Young Chemical Engineer award” from IIChE for their splendid performance in various events like SCHEMCON, CHEMCON, OYCE, etc.
IIChE Students Chapter organized most prestigious event of IIChE SCHEMCON-2015.

SCHEMCON, Students’ Chemical Engineering Congress, is an annual event organized by the Students’ Chapter of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) under one of its Regional Centers. It provides a platform for the Chemical Engineering Students to interact, learn and gain exposure to the expanding arena of Chemical Engineering. SCHEMCON-2015 is the 11th Annual Session Students Chemical Engineering Congress. It is organized jointly by the IIChE Students’ Chapter at the Department of Chemical Engineering, MIT Academy of Engineering, Alandi (D), Pune and the IIChE Pune Regional Centre (IIChE PRC), Pune.

The Theme
“Sustainable Development for Better Tomorrow” the theme of this event is mainly focused on newer areas in sustainable development with thrust areas like Energy and Environment, Catalysis, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Thermodynamics, Mass /Heat/Momentum Transfer, Herbal Extraction, Renewable Energy, Modeling and Simulation, Safety, Bioprocess and Biotechnology, Process Control, Process Development & Design, etc..

The interest shown by budding chemical engineers was enormous throughout India. Total 407 abstracts were shortlisted for oral/poster & 04 were for M P Chary Award presentation.

The abstracts were segregated into various thrust areas and 10 parallel sessions for different thrust areas were arranged.

The event was entirely sponsored by various funding agencies and industries like Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India; Thermax India Ltd; Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE);  IIChE Pune Regional Center; IIChE Hyderabad Regional Center; IIChE Northern Regional Center; Vansum Industries; IIChE Bangalore Regional Center; KSB Instruments Co. Pvt Ltd.; HES Solutions Pvt. LTD; Equinox Software & Services Pvt Ltd; etc.
